How to Animate Image with the Puppet Tools

Basic of Puppet Tools in Animation

Puppet Tools

The Puppet effect works by deforming the portion of an image according to the positions of pins that you move and place. These pins help to define which parts of the image move, which parts remain firm and which parts are in front when portions overlap.

Each Puppet Tool is used to modify a specific Type of Pins:

Puppet Tool

  1. Puppet Pin Tool: This tool is used to place and deform pins.
  2. Puppet Starch Tool: This tool is used to place starch pins which stiffen parts of the image, so that is distorted less.
  3. Puppet Overlap Tool: This tool is used to place overlap pins, which indicate which parts of an image should look in front of others when distortion causes parts of the image to overlap one another.

How to Animate Image with Puppet Tools

The stopwatch switch is automatically set the position property of deform pins as the Pin is created. Therefore, a keyframe is set or modified every time to change the position of deform pins.

This auto-keyframing is unlike the most properties in after effects, for which you must explicitly set the stopwatch switch by adding keyframes or an expression to animate every property.

The auto animation of deform pins makes it convenient to add and animate them in the Layer Panel or Composition Panel, without manipulating the properties in the timeline panel.

Click on below Video: Adobe After Effects Puppet Tool Tutorial

1. Select the image layer for animating.

2. Using the Puppet pin tool, do one of the followings in the layer panel or composition panel.
  • Click on any nontransparent pixel of a raster layer to apply the puppet effect and create a mesh for outlines created by auto-tracing the alpha channel of a layer.
  • Click in a closed path on a vector layer to apply the puppet effect and create a mesh for the outlines defined by the path.
  • Click in a closed, unlocked mask to use the puppet effect and create a mesh for the outlines defined by the mask path.
  • Click outside on the closed path on a vector layer to apply the puppet effect without creating a mesh. Outlines are created for paths on the layer, though an outline is just visible when a puppet tools pointer is over the area that defines outline. Place the pointer on the area enclosed by a path to see the outline in which a mesh will be created if you click on the point. Click on an outline to create a mesh.
3. To add the multiple deforms pins click on one or more places in the outline.

Use as few pins to achieve the desired result. The natural deformation can be lost if you over-constrain the image. Simply add pins to the parts of the figure that you want to control.

Example: When animating a waving person, add a pin to every foot to hold them on the ground and add a pin to the waving hand.

4. Now go to another time in the composition and move the position of one or more of the deform pins by dragging it in the composition panel or layer panel with a puppet pin tool. Repeat all this step until your animation is completed.

You can also modify the motion paths of the deform pins using the same techniques that apply to modify any other motion paths.

How to Improve your Drawing Skills

Drawing Skills

No matter what type of artist you are, the chances are pencil drawing was the skill that helped you to learn how to draw and kicked off your creative journey. Understanding the fundamentals and process of drawing is essential for becoming a better artist.

Click on below Video: How to Practice and Improve your Arts Skills

Drawing slows you down. When you draw you take time to look at something, to analyze and recreate it. You are not simply setting up to capture it and move on to the next image. You become acutely aware of form, color and proportion. Understand light effect and shadow and how they reveal and define a style.

5 Tips to Improve your Drawing Skills

Practice will make you a better artist in drawing and these five simple tips help you to improve your drawing skills faster and improve your perception to see better what you're drawing.

1. Make a Grid

This is important if you experience from not being able to proportion out your sketches correctly. While keeping your dimensions straight for more realistic drawings, measuring out a square grid can keep you in check.

Click on below Video: How to draw a Face using Grid Method

The very first step is to measure out a square grid over the image you plan on copying on your paper, then copy the same grid with the same measurements onto your drawing paper then try to draw that identical image from square to square. This way you make the image as a whole less daunting and intimidating by breaking down in the different parts. If your image paper and sketch paper are of the same size, then the image you create on the grid should match up. If you are using a light shaded pencil on the grid, you should be able to erase them later using an eraser.

2. Make Use of Different Shapes

If you have a problem with complicated subject matter such as people, animals or random object then start it by breaking down your subject with basic shapes and draw them onto paper before grabbing the more complicated aspects of drawing.

Draw lightly so you can erase and recreate the big or small shapes with perfect defined lines as you continue to sketch the fine details. This will help ease the problem of getting bogged down on small details while helping you to gain perspective on the general form.

3. Gestural Motion Drawings

Try to practice with gesture motion drawings. This technique helps you to improve your drawing skills. By capturing the motions of people or animal, you can quickly gain a comprehensive perspective of how different forms, muscles and bodies move and react in motion. Spend 2 minutes in visualizing and drawing the motion of any subject you like that interests you are disregarding details and focusing only on form. This helps you in visualizing how different bodies move in motion and loosen up drawings and pictures. By getting a better view of a base form, you won't be restricted to sketches that look stiff, boxy of contrived.

4. Change your Drawing Equipment

Drawing EquipmentSometimes the medium you prefer most such as charcoal or pen can be a bit restrictive. By shaping up your drawing medium every now and again, you can find that you can get new styles or effects of drawing. Try to use a large pencil like Jerry’s Jumbo Jet Black Pencil for a blended effect on the sketch. If you use a dull number 2 pencil when you sketch, try to use a sharp technical pen and drawing pen for crisp, sharp lines that create a refined style and more professional drawing.

5. Practice

"Practices Makes You Perfect" and technically it is true. Do practice in your free time. When you wake up and before you go to bed wherever you are on the bus, on the train, at lunch use your time to improve your drawing skills. But by varying up your subjects, when you draw and where you draw, you can learn a lot about the different ways of drawing. It’s possible that you can be more inspired drawing from real life than from a printed out photograph or picture. You can only learn these things by continually drawing and gaining new experiences and animation techniques. As your experience grows and your drawing subjects vary more and more, you will get a better experience and improve your drawing skills quickly.

Graphic Designer Skills

Graphic Designer Skills Needed to become a Successful Designer

You don't need to be a perfect artist to become a graphic designer. While it could help your career and creative side, it is not necessary to be able to draw, design or have any of the other graphic designer skills required to be an artist or designer in the traditional sense.

Graphic design is all about taking elements such as type, photos, illustrations and color combining them to create in the powerful message. In many cases, an artist will be hired to create and design a drawing, painting or illustration for a project and that will then be handed off to a graphic designer to incorporate into the piece.

Example: Business card, flyer, poster, album cover or book cover.

Where Artistic Talent help a Graphic Designer

Graphic Designer
A graphic designer also creates his/her drawings, paintings or illustrations in some cases, but it is not considered a fundamental part of a designer’s skill set.

It can be helpful for your career or business if you create your own artwork. It saves your money by completing more tasks by yourself. Also, consider that additional creative skills you develop can improve your chances of landing design positions.

You should know the artwork that may be incorporated into work. You will need the creativity to bring it together with other elements effectively. Your knowledge of color, lines, shapes, and other design elements are crucial to displaying the artwork to convey the clients or customer message.

This all leads to the reason why designer are often grouped into the work category of creatives rather than the artists: you need to be creative in work, but you don't necessarily create art. This group in the advertisements industry also includes videographers, art directors, photographers, and other creative professionals that you might be working with.

Create Stop-Motion Animation

Different Techniques used to Create Stop-Motion Animation

What is Animation?
What is Animation?

The technique of using multiple images viewed in rapid sequence to create motion is called animation. To understand animation in a better way, try this: Example: Imagine yourself holding a magazine where each page features a picture of a bowl sitting on a table. You see that every picture is different as if the picture rotated the bowl slightly before capturing each image angle. When you flip rapidly through the pages, the cup appears to spin. Let take a look and discuss about stop-motion animation and its techniques.

What is Stop-Motion Animation?
What is Stop-Motion Animation?

There are different types of animation. Traditional cell animation uses images sketched or painted by hand, and computer animation uses images created with computer software and hardware. Stop-motion animation uses images created with objects such as clay models or paper cutouts.

Stop-otion animation is a simple process. The artist places all the objects to be animated in their positions. An image of the objects is then captured on film. Then the object is moved slightly, and then another image is captured. This process of capturing image from a different angle is repeated hundreds or thousands of times.

Click on Below Video: What Is Stop Motion Animation and How Does It Work?

Example: To create a video using stop-motion animation featuring a bunch of pens that move in a circular pattern. You start by positioning the pens in a circle and take a picture using a digital camera. You move the pens slightly in a clockwise direction and take another picture. Then repeat this process until you have taken all the pictures.

You then transfer all the pictures to your computer where you use special software to create a video which rapidly displays the picture in the order they were taken. When you play the video, the pens move in a circle just as you imagined. This is how you created your stop-motion animation video.

Stop-Motion Animation Techniques

Stop-motion animation techniques include object animation, puppet animation, clay animation and cutout animation. The basic difference among these techniques is the type of object used to create the animation. Also, stop-motion animation is combined with a live action film or video footage using a process called compositing.

1. Object Animation

Object animation is one of the most widely used stop-motion animation techniques. Simple objects are used to create this type of animation.

2. Puppet Animation

Stop-motion animation make use of more complex models with detailed textures and movable parts are called puppet animation.
